With less than four months left in 2025, we’re bringing you information about celebrating New Year’s in Taiwan for those planning overseas trips during the year-end and New Year holidays!
If you’re spending New Year’s in Taipei, the Taipei 101 countdown fireworks are a must-see!
Since Taiwan’s main New Year celebration is the Lunar New Year, December 31st is not typically a quiet family gathering. Actually, the only public holiday is January 1st. December 31st has more of a party atmosphere to welcome the New Year.
Every year, Taipei 101, the city’s iconic landmark, hosts its spectacular countdown fireworks. And it’s truly extravagant—the fireworks are launched from the entire building! The first time you see it, you’ll probably wonder about the technology behind it and if it’s safe—it’s so intense and impressive!

Book your hotel early if staying in Taipei for the holidays!
Taipei is an expensive city for hotels year-round, but prices surge dramatically during the year-end and New Year period. If you decide to travel, secure your hotel immediately. Last November, when I searched for hotels in Taipei city, prices of 100,000 JPY per night were normal… shocking! Most Airbnb-style accommodations were already fully booked, so early reservation is essential.
Are there other events besides the countdown fireworks?
Yes! At Taipei City Hall Plaza, the “Taipei’s Most High New Year City – 2025 Countdown Concert” takes place. It starts at 7 PM on December 31st and features many famous artists.
The area will be extremely crowded, so if you plan to attend, it’s best to secure your spot early. For the best view, arriving around 1 PM is recommended.
Recommended spots to watch the fireworks
The Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall is a great spot. It’s close to Taipei 101 and has a wide open space, making it perfect for unobstructed views. The hall is just a short walk from Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall MRT Station on the Blue Line.
Due to expected crowds, it’s best to reserve your spot around 9 PM. After 10:30 PM, most of the open space will be filled with people, making it difficult to find a place to sit, so plan ahead.
Traffic regulations on the day
Traffic restrictions will be in place across a wide area around Xinyi District. Most roads will be closed to vehicles until around 1 AM the following day, so use the MRT or walk instead of taxis or buses. After the fireworks, the MRT stations will be extremely crowded, so consider walking a few stations away to board.
