Best season to travel to Taiwan

How hot is summer in Taiwan? Does Taiwan have winter? Recommended seasons for traveling to Taiwan.

Today, we’ll talk about Taiwan’s climate and introduce the best seasons to visit!

ree

Northern Taiwan is subtropical, southern Taiwan is tropical.

Surrounded by the sea, Taiwan has high humidity year-round. The climate varies slightly by region: the north is subtropical, and the south is tropical.

Are there four seasons?Yes, but Taiwan’s climate is slightly different from Japan’s.

  • Spring: Temperatures are similar to early summer in Japan. Humidity is high, and there is a lot of rain, similar to Japan’s rainy season. In some areas, you can even see cherry blossoms. By May, temperatures start to feel like summer.

  • Summer: Very hot with strong sunlight. Taiwan’s summer heat can be intense, so sun umbrellas and sunglasses are essential. Summer is also typhoon season, which can sometimes result in work or school closures. Rain usually comes as short but heavy downpours, so it’s less annoying than constant rain. Always carry a folding umbrella.

  • Autumn: Taiwan’s best season! By October, the heat has eased, and the weather is pleasant. Fewer typhoons and more stable weather make it ideal for sightseeing. Unlike summer, it’s comfortable to go outdoors and travel longer distances.

  • Winter: In the north, temperatures can drop below 10°C. Taipei’s older buildings can feel very cold indoors, and high humidity can make it feel even colder, so winter coats or down jackets are often necessary. The south remains warm, around 15–25°C, making it an ideal escape from the cold.

If visiting Taipei, March–April or October–November is recommended. Taipei winters are cold, summers are humid, and rain is frequent year-round. Spring and autumn are more stable with moderate temperatures, making them the best times to visit. Even winter is relatively mild for Japanese travelers, but temperature differences between day and night can be large, so don’t forget your coat.

Central Taiwan: Mostly sunny and stable throughout the year.

Southern Taiwan: Warm even in winter, but summers can be very hot and typhoons may cause severe damage, so caution is advised.

Summary:

If your trip is mainly for food or shopping, Taiwan is suitable year-round. Winter may be slightly cold, but generally tolerable for Japanese visitors. For enjoying nature and sightseeing, spring or autumn is the best season.
