Taiwan, a country embraced by the ocean, is a paradise for ocean lovers. Except for Nantou County, every county in Taiwan faces the sea. The waters here are a stunning emerald green, and the coastline varies greatly, offering completely different views depending on the region.
Taiwan is an island surrounded by four seas:
East: Pacific Ocean
South: Bashi Channel (between Taiwan and the Philippines)
West: Taiwan Strait (between Taiwan and mainland China)
North: East China Sea
Main Coastal Features
East Coast (Hualien & Taitung):
Steep mountains plunging into the sea, with dramatic cliffs
Strong waves and hidden scenic beaches
West Coast (Tainan, Kaohsiung, Taichung):
Sandy beaches and tidal flats
Developed harbors, industrial zones, and fishing villages
South (Kenting):
Famous for resort beaches
Popular for diving and snorkeling
Qixingtan Beach (East Coast)

Located in Hualien, Qixingtan is a beautiful pebble beach where the vast Pacific Ocean meets the sky. It is a famous spot for watching the sunrise or stargazing. Although swimming is not allowed, it is perfect for walking or cycling along the coast while listening to the soothing sound of waves. Loved by many as a peaceful retreat to feel close to nature.
Kenting (South)

At the southern tip of Taiwan lies Kenting, the country’s most famous beach resort. With its white sandy beaches, clear waters, and year-round warm climate, it offers marine sports, nature walks, and lively night markets. Though access requires time (about 4.5 hours from Taipei by car or 2 hours from Kaohsiung), the breathtaking scenery—often called the “Hawaii of Taiwan”—is well worth a visit.
Baisha Bay (North)

Baisha Bay, located in New Taipei City, is a well-known beach just 40 minutes by car from central Taipei, making it a perfect day trip. Its soft white sand and calm waters attract crowds of locals and tourists on weekends. Activities like surfing and barbecues are also popular here—an ideal seaside escape when visiting Taipei.
Penghu (West)

Penghu, an archipelago about 50–60 km west of Taiwan’s main island, is made up of around 90 islands. It is renowned for its natural beauty: crystal-clear waters, white sandy beaches, and striking basalt formations. The clean water makes it a hotspot for diving, snorkeling, and kayaking. Among its many islands, Qimei and Wangan are especially popular for their stunning seascapes.
