When it comes to Taiwan, food is a must! Taiwan is truly a gourmet paradise, but when you think of Taiwanese cuisine, what comes to mind? Braised pork rice (lu rou fan), xiaolongbao, taro balls… There are so many dishes that you could never try them all in just one trip.

This time, we would like to introduce you to beef noodle soup — a classic Taiwanese favorite. Tender, slow-braised beef. Springy noodles coated in a rich, flavorful broth.

It’s a dish bursting with Taiwanese character, one you’d be hard-pressed to find anywhere else in the world.

Even in Taipei, there are countless famous beef noodle shops. When traveling here, you don’t want to waste your limited time on the wrong choice, yet it’s hard to decide which shop to visit.

That’s why you should check out the Taipei International Beef Noodle Festival, hosted by the Taipei City Government since 2005. Beef noodle shops from all over the city compete for the prestigious Gold Award!

When will it be held?

In 2025, it will take place over three days from October 10 to October 12.

Where will it be held?

The event will be held at Taipei Expo Park, just a short walk from Yuanshan Station on the MRT Red Line. It’s a very convenient location to access.

The competition is divided into three themes: “Hong Shao” (soy sauce–based), “Qing Dun” (clear broth), and “Creative.” Each category offers over 50 varieties of unique beef noodle soups, ranging from classic flavors to innovative new tastes, ensuring there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

In the 2024 competition, the famous dumpling chain Ba Fang Yun Ji won the Gold Award for its beef noodle soup! Their wide, thick noodles are smooth and springy, while the Hong Shao (soy sauce–based) broth offers a deep, herbal flavor reminiscent of Chinese medicinal herbs. The rich broth is infused with the sweet fat of the beef, achieving a perfect balance between savory and sweet.

And here’s the best part — it’s only NT$168 a bowl! In recent years, it’s become rare to find quality beef noodle soup under NT$200 due to rising prices, so this is a great value. Despite its dark color that suggests a heavy flavor, this beef noodle soup is surprisingly light and refreshing.
